Thesis
It happened in steel, oil, shipping, print, and to the trade that gave us our name. We work with institutions that intend to be the one.
The work
In 1884 a machine in Durham did in a day what forty-eight skilled people had done by hand. The people were not the problem. The forty-eight was. Nobody had asked whether the number was necessary, because the number had always been there.
Every large company carries its own forty-eight. It is rarely a headcount. More often it is a stack of tools, a chain of approvals, a set of vendors that each made sense once. We find the number, and we ask the question no one has asked of it.
We believe the work of this decade is the reverse motion. Not building more, but finding what was always underneath. The best teams do not ask what to add. They ask what the institution would look like if it had been designed today, by people who knew everything it has since learned.
The year
In one year, a few people made something that everyone else was then required to measure themselves against.
The people
Our work touches systems that hundreds of millions of people depend on. We ask a great deal of the people who join us. In return, we take care of them properly.
We are always interested in hearing from exceptional people. Write to careers@1884.co.
